We are pleased to announce the visit of Dr. William Oaks, Director of Purdue University, USA, to KL University, Aziznagar. The purpose of his visit is to further collaboration on EPICS (Engineering Projects in Community Service) projects between the two esteemed institutions. The visit was presided over by Dr. A. Ramakrishna, Principal of KL University, Dr. M. Kishore Babu, Director of International Relations and Dr. M. Saidireddy, EPICS Coordinator, and attended by all esteemed faculty members.

EPICS is a program that encourages students to use their engineering skills to address real-world challenges faced by communities. It fosters a sense of social responsibility, teamwork, and innovative thinking among students, allowing them to apply their theoretical knowledge to practical, impactful projects.

During the visit, Dr. William Oaks met with the leadership team of KL University and discussed ways to strengthen the partnership between the two institutions. They explored opportunities for joint research projects, student exchanges, and faculty collaborations in diverse fields of engineering.

The Guide accommodated a small hut for us, and there were no taps there are only drums in the washroom but we managed somehow. After a while guide came with the food and I started the conversation with him and asked about why there are no taps and why are they storing water in drums, he explained that water is available but there is no electricity and we are illiterates that’s why we won’t use the motor, our women daily bring the water from the ponds after walking for few kilometers and after hearing it I got a bit surprised and there were no lights and they were using lamps only.

After that, all my friends slept but I didn’t sleep that night & started thinking about how hard these villagers are suffering. Then I decided to innovate something for this village. I decided to work on the centrifugal cycle as they use the cycle as means of transport. The cycle can be used as a centrifugal pump where they can pump the water from the well to the tank. In the morning the guide came to wake us up and he dropped us at our destination. I felt sad about their condition as they are illiterate and they are financially weak. On the way back home I was busy thinking about the idea. Next week when college started in one of our classes our professor gave information about the EPICS in IEEE and gave good knowledge about it then I got clarity on my project.

I started my project quickly mean while I was lacking some skills regarding the project. I was simultaneously studying and going on building my project and my friends and KL University faculty supported me a lot. They have also played a crucial role because they not only funded my project but they have given me the courage to work on the project. At last, we prepared the prototype with a huge effort and went to Nallamala forest to the village we gifted this prototype and I installed the total mechanism near the wells. Now the time and energy will be saved drastically and the villagers were so happy because their hours of work have been reduced to minutes. Later I thought of upgrading it then I got an idea of a tread mill cycle mechanism after that I designed a centrifugal thread cycle that generates power as well as pumps the water automatically.  To take this project to the next level we started collaborating with an international body (IEEE) in this way my trip to Nallamala is going on.

Students had set up 25 stalls, where they showcased their artistic talents like nail art stall, Mehandi stall, temporary tattoo, artificial jewelry stall, karaoke stall, and selfie photo booth, and conducted a few indoor games. There were also a few yummy food stalls to serve the delightful appetite of the students. The event helped students to learn how to earn higher than their investment. They also learned their first practical lesson in marketing and an unforgettable learning experience and are looking forward to more such events in the future. The event was inaugurated by Dr. A. Mr. Srikanth Pottekula, a prominent entrepreneur, start-up consultant, and business and strategy developer, dealing with organization and process restructuring and project management, said that He is into media and animation since 1995. He was the production head at DQ Entertainment for the 3D animated series Mickey Mouse and the Club House. He has co-produced the TV series Twisted Whiskers with American Greetings and has been the CEO at Discreet Arts since 2012. Discreet Arts studios are located in India, the Philippines, and the USA. Mr. Tammareddy Bharadwaj (Prominent Producer and Director in Tollywood)

Mr. Tammareddy Bharadwaj pursued a career as a Civil Engineer in Andhra Pradesh Irrigation Department. He then stepped into the film industry in 1979 as a producer and director. He has worked on titles like “Maro Kurukshetram”, “Manmadha Samrajyam”, “Alajadi”, “Siva Sakthi”, “Urmila”, One by Two”, “Rowdy Annayya”, “Kuthuru”, “Sanchalanam”, “Entha Bagundho” and many more since then, he has also acted in the movie “Ee Rojullo” as himself, received Swarna (Gold) Nandi Award for Best Feature Film for the movie “Pothe Poni”.

Advice to students: Creativity plays a major role in the growing gaming and animation industry. So, if you want to sustain and make a mark in this market, you should be innovative and creative. 

Mr. Rajiv Chilaka (Founder and CEO of Green Gold Animations)

Mr. Rajiv Chilaka is the creator of the Krishna cartoon series and Chhota Bheem, which have now been made into animated series and films. Mr Chilaka did his BE in Electronics and Telecommunications engineering; and later Animation course at the Academy of Art University. He set up Green Gold Animations in 2001, the animated series “Bongo” was the studio’s first creation in 2004, followed by Vikram Betal in 2005, which was aired on a cartoon network. Characters like Krishna, Mighty Raju, Chhota Bheem, and Chutki are well-known by every child and adult in our country. A few amongst many achievements of Mr. Rajiv Chilaka is an honorary doctorate of humane letters by the Academy of Art University, San Francisco. 

Advice to students: Animation is a competitive area, and with relevant work experience and technical skills, you can attain great heights in your career. 

Mr. Imtiaz Hussain (Co-founder Yesgnome Studios)

Mr. Imtiaz spoke individually with every student getting to know them personally. After that, he shared detailed information about Yesgnome, its partnerships, and the project on which they worked. He offered event passes to the students for the International Game Development Conference at Novotel in November 2022. He gave a deep insight into the potential of the gaming industry and how its profits surpass those of the entertainment industry. He told the students the importance of having a mentor, making reading a daily habit, growing their network, getting out of their comfort zone, trying new things, and inspiring people.

Advice to students: The gaming industry provides a bundle of opportunities for budding learners. It’s time to grab them.

Ms. Jyoti Bhoir Technical (Art Lead, Yesgnome Studios) 

Ms. Jyoti Bhoir, who deals with artists and programmers, gave the students information about the game creation process, the importance of having strong fundamentals in color and drawing for artists and logic for programmers. She shared the reality of the competition in the current job market, after which she answered questions regarding portfolio requirements while applying for a job.

Mr. Anubhav Khanna (General Manager, 2D production Department, Green Gold Animation)

He spoke about the usefulness of storytelling and how the students need to watch a lot of movies and try to understand how emotions are conveyed through images. He also shared the work ethics followed by animators in Japan, which he learned during his tenure at Nihodo Media. He gave tips to the students and faculty about learning animation and answered education and industry-related questions.

Advice to students:  If you want to pursue a career in the animation and gaming industry, ensure that you have strong foundations in the drawing.
